Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are a critical component of any comprehensive fire safety strategy, providing the means for immediate, first-response action against small fires before they escalate. Proper selection, placement, and maintenance are paramount to their effectiveness.

In the UK, the provision and upkeep of fire extinguishers are governed by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, with detailed guidance provided by British Standards, particularly BS 5306. This legislation mandates that a "responsible person" ensures appropriate fire-fighting equipment is available and properly maintained in most non-domestic premises.

Different types of fire extinguishers are designed to combat specific classes of fire:

Water & Foam: Effective on Class A (solids like wood, paper) and Class B (flammable liquids).

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide): Ideal for Class B (flammable liquids) and electrical fires (Class E).

Dry Powder: Versatile for Class A, B, and C (flammable gases), and some electrical fires, though indoor use is generally discouraged due to visibility issues.

Wet Chemical: Specifically designed for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats.
